Salt water

It has been an incredibly jam-packed busy day!
I started my day as usual with my Bible and other readings, then I journal.
This typically takes about an hour, sometimes more.
After I journal, I send the messages and begin my day.
Today's agenda was to take my sister in love to Prodisee pantry for 100 pounds of groceries.
This is so needed by her and helps tremendously with her food budget.
I also needed to ship a package or two to India.
I've needed to send these things to Christina for a couple of weeks now and today was the day.
Chris volunteered to take his sister to the pantry, so that freed up my time to get the packages ready.
Packing involves removing price tags, bags and generally just making everything generic.
You also cannot have any lithium batteries or batteries period.
It is becoming harder and harder to ship overseas.
I get the boxes packed, and head to the post office.
There, I have to fill out paperwork with my name, address, her name and address, and sign it.
I also have to list every single item, its cost, and its weight.
The totals all have to add up and cannot be over $200, or you have to pay extra.
Even the weights have to add up.
One of the boxes took three sheets to list all the items.
Each sheet has my name and address, her name and address, and my signature.
It's a lot and my heads hurts after getting it all done, paid for, and out of my hands.
I then headed home.

Chris beat me to the house and had taken the artwork from upstairs to the downstairs.
It is a lot of bags, all separated with plastic bags, against each artwork.
We took everything outside and in between dachshunds trying to get into the van, we loaded in the art.
This is a new system for loading, and I had to remove items and
replace them in a delicate game of Tetris.
I also have to be sure that nothing will fall out when we open a door or the hatch.
This took a while to get everything into the vehicle.
I asked about the ornaments and Chris said what ornaments?
There they were under the sewing machine.
I managed to get them to fit, then realized the tree for them was still upstairs.
I went to the studio to get the tree and there was another bag of art!
Coming back down, Chris said there's no way that will fit.
(He doesn't like Tetris as much as I do!)
He went into the house shaking his head.
After a few minutes of gentle rearranging, everything had a place, and I was done.
We then went to lunch where I got a salad, and Chris got a burger and fries.

When we returned, Chris took a nap, and I headed to the studio.
I needed to trace out all the paintings for tonight's small group at church.
It took a couple of hours, but I got 12 canvases traced off and ready for class.
I packed extra just in case.
I then went for the evening sojourn with the rottens,(dachshunds)
When we got back, we dropped off the dogs for a quick trip to the grocery store.
I had a couple of things needed for dinner.
I prepared our meal, ate, then cleaned up and headed to class tonight.

The class was fun but ran longer than expected.
I always enjoy the chatter of the ladies and the laughter.
This painting about salt water was our piece for tonight.
After a lesson on sweat, tears, and the sea we jumped into creating.
Everyone had fun!

Seahorses

Seahorses are some of my favorite animals to paint.
Such beautiful creatures with many different sizes and shapes.
I will always paint them because they are fun.
This one is also on one of my shadowboxes that Chris builds.

Today was a different kind of day with many things happening.
I had a veterinarian appointment for both puppies this morning.
The Vet texted me to bring Trixie back in because her bloodwork for next week's teeth cleaning came back with some bad numbers.
So, we took both puppies and Trixie off to the vet.
Puppies were perfectly fine, although we need to feed them a little more.
Dachshunds are funny, they will literally eat themselves to death given the chance.
So, we'll feed them a little more.

Trixie however....
Her blood and urine came back with high electrolytes and potassium.
My Vet explained it may be Addisons disease.
I had to leave her there for an hour for further testing.
When I went to pick her up, I cried as I paid the bill.
(memories of Tut with Cushing's disease)
I pray I didn't upset the girl at the desk.
I did receive a text from the Vet telling me she was sorry she didn't see me when I came to get Trixie.
I texted back don't worry at all.
I am not upset with either the clinic or the Vet.
They are such a caring group of people there, that truly love the animals they work with.
I should hear something tomorrow about the test results.
I just pray she's okay.
I also thank God for the income that allows me to pay for the Vet bills.

Chris worked hard on a new platform for the art and equipment in the van for shows.
It will be high enough for the tents, walls, pipes, sta-bars, chairs, curtains, weights, umbrella, fans, lights, cords for fans, and whatever else we can fit under there.
He made the platform from a sheet of plywood and drilled holes with his hole saw to lighten the weight.
He then routered the edges and rounded them off.
It is a great fit and still gives us 24 inches above for the bags with art in them.
His goal is to stop us from stacking the art flat, because they are getting dented while traveling.
I love that he enjoys woodworking and building.
He also reinstalled my compost barrel in the corner of the yard.
That helps with all the vegetable trash we create while trying to eat healthier.
The healthy eating is going well as we are both losing weight, and Chris's knees are less painful.
We also have more energy.

Speaking of eating healthier, we had spaghetti tonight made with Spaghetti squash.
Different, but yummy!
Chris is enjoying new things as well.
But he's still sneaking too much sugar into his daily intake.

I also took the time to enter shows for next (GULP) year!
People don't realize how much time and money are tied into entering and getting ready for shows.
It is a serious investment in time, talent, and money.
I entered the jury for Arts and Crafts Fairhope, Ballyhoo, Gulf Breeze, Melbourne, and Chain of parks.
The latest show is the last weekend in April.
We already have reservations for a state park the following week for
Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, the first weekend in May.
The jury for that one is really late, I don't think it comes out until after the first of the year.
We will still go camping even if I don't get into the show on Amelia Island.
We are also on pins and needles waiting to make reservations at Wickham Park for the Melbourne show.
We have to wait until 6 months before, because we are not Florida residents.
We used to be able to make reservations for the following year while we were there.
It really is a lovely campground to stay in.
I can get work done, and the laundry too!
I've got to repack the camper soon too.
I don't like to wait until the last minute for everything.
I make lists, then check things off as they are loaded into the trailer.
I also have new black curtains to cover the corners in the tent that need Velcro added to them.
That will be an afternoon of sewing.
So much to do, and only 28 days to do it!
I'll get it done for sure!

Seahorses and Sirens

This is the completed seahorse dimensional painting.
It was an adventure to create and cut out the seahorse to fit.
This piece measures 15 inches.
I am still enjoying the works, just not able to post every day.

Last night I was just too tired to stay awake much past church.
It had been a long day of designing and tracing off pieces, then cutting them out to go on the rounds.
We then were off to the church for the breakdown of the Lost world.
It took eight hours to put into place.
Wednesday evening took two hours to break down.
The long neck and the tyrannosaurus rex have a home in children's church for the next two months.
Our pastor is also using 4 of the panels to decorate the stage along with two of the gates and sign.
Several of the plant decorations are being used as well.
The velociraptor and triceratops are going to the Daphne public library.
Unfortunately, the Pterodactyl had to go into the trash bin.
He was just too big and difficult to hang.
Excitement is already building for next year's Summer Surge.
This is the first year I've heard so much positive feedback from everything.
I've heard from both Pastors, their wives, and many parents.
I am amazed at what the Spirit allowed me to create.
Next year........

This one!
"Siren" is 14.5 inches and was interesting to paint.
You will have to see this one in person to really appreciate the detail and the cut-out portions.
The background was nearly a disaster as I forgot to paint it before gluing her down.
Fortunately, I was able to get my brush down into the back and make seaweed.
She is a lovely addition to the series.
More wonders to come!
Tomorrow is going to be a tough one!
It's a 24 inch piece, recycling an older octopus that I'm trying to salvage.
It's going to be pretty amazing.

Long day

I've managed to have a studio day today.
I left for lunch, only to get back at it when we got back.
This seahorse will eventually be on a tray, but it needs to be cut out, sanded, and painted on the edges.
I have two seahorses drawn on the tray and I will paint them tomorrow.
Then the seahorse will be affixed and ready.
The rest of my day was spent designing another 24-inch dimensional painting.
This one will be spectacular, I think!
It will be a visit back to a painting that I have had for some time with an octopus on it.
I am adding the dimension after drawing and drawing all day on it.

Tomorrow finds me also taking down the sets for the summer surge, Lost World.
I think the kids have had fun with the design and lots of photos
have been taken with their respective dinosaurs.
It will be lot of work, but altogether worth it as we salvage and store some of the pieces.
That way, we only need paint for most of the flats.
I'm looking forward to the next year already!

Seahorses, coral, and more dinosaurs!

This one is a part of the series of elongated canvases for between windows or above doors.
I had people ask for years before I actually started this series a couple of years ago.
They began as 4 x 24-inch canvas, then we expanded them to 6 x 24-inch.
It gives the effect of the elongation with a width that is easier to create on.
Anyway, this is today's painting!

This is the final stage design consisting of a dozen flats that can be repainted from year to year.

Pastor Tim puts the wings onto the body after hanging the Pterodactyl.

The triceratops in place with its background panels.

The tyrannosaurus in place on opposite side of the foyer.

Velociraptor "Blue"

Long neck in place.
I still cannot imagine it is all finally done, and the children are enjoying them.
Some of them seemed in awe, others were non-plussed.
Oh well, they're done, and they have homes.
At least temporarily!
Two will stay at the church, maybe three.
The others will go to the Daphne public library and may make a tour around Baldwin County.
Sundays set up took over 7 hours to complete.
It was a late night.

Many hours, many hands, many hearts are in this, the biggest Summer Surge I have designed to date!
I am forever grateful to everyone who lifted a brush, cut a leaf, taped a leaf, painted a panel, painted a dinosaur or a leaf.
Those who prayed for us, but most especially the parents that allow their children to come and learn a little about Jesus!

A horse you can't ride!

I am getting into a routine with the paintings now.
There are a LOT of steps that have to be done in the correct order.
Find and source the trays.
Paint trays with Kilz to prevent leaching of the paint.
Paint with white acrylic, twice.
Get round wood pieces cut to fit, Kilz them, then paint white.
Design the drawing of the piece to fit.
Cut out top piece using the scroll saw.
Sand top piece, using Dremel tool to detail.
Paint background on round tray.
Attach cut out to round frame using brad nails.
Fill holes with white paint.
Paint piece in Sepia.
Sign.
Varnish.
Put hanger on the piece.
I am having a really fun time designing them!

Sarah and I also worked on a dinosaur today.
Getting closer to the finish line with these big bad boys!
Soon we'll be painting them black as an undercoat for the detail paint.
They're going to be awesome.
Now I just need to find them homes afterward so they don't end up in the trash.
They would make great decor for a child's dinosaur birthday party actually.
The triceratops alone is 10 feet long.

Wild ride today!

These days are running by so fast now!

I am just hanging on for the wild ride to the end of the 100 days by the
beginning of the National Shrimp Festival next week.
I am very excited to be able to paint these miniatures framed by the
drawers from vintage sewing machines.
The first set of 28 was because of a neighbor who wanted my husband Chris
to take her machine base and make a table.
I asked her what she wanted to do with the drawers, and she just said get rid of them.
I didn't want to just throw them away.
Chris figured out how to cut them in thirds and they make perfect little shadowboxes.
The backings are thin wood panel from a recycled skateboard ramp.
Our son uses the machines to make steampunk lamps as well.
They are recycled, fun to paint, and affordable too!

I also must apologize because the photos are not edited.
My phone is acting the fool these days, and my husband dropping it a few minutes ago doesn't help.
Anyway, tonight is 10 paintings total.
Not all painted in one day, but I can paint several in a day!
I love painting miniatures.

Enjoy the menagerie!

Here's looking at you!

Sandpipers central!

Octopus escaping!

Pelican Piling.
You can see my messy easel and some collected art too.

Seahorse with coral.
Notice this one has the lock mechanism still in the drawer.

They just are lovely to look at, and so fun to paint!

Seahorse

What a day today was!
I am amazed at the calm and peace I am given these days when confronted by a situation.
I started my day as usual, with coffee and Bible study to get me on the right track.
If I don't start this way, I seem to be out of sorts all day.
Anyway, I got up from Bible study, reading and journaling, then sending messages out.
I stripped and made the bed.
Started the sheets to washing and because I had a chiropractic appointment, I did not head to the studio.
I then started picking and choosing clothing for the upcoming trip to the National Shrimp Festival.
Four days four outfits.
Except I couldn't pick which four, so I had Chris help later in the day.

I also talked to Chris about the hat situation I have.
I wear a hat to shows instead of sunglasses because I want people to be able to see my eyes.
I collect pins from areas we go while doing shows.
Problem is, it's a lot of pins and they are poking me in the head and making my hat feel really small.
I asked if he could remove the spike on the back, then drill holes in the pins so
I could sew them on the hat band instead.
He got them all altered, and I had a pile on the counter awaiting my needle and thread.

I then headed to my appointment and came back home.
Into the studio I went, finishing a good bit of a painting I was working on.
I packed several paintings, marking the bags for the National Shrimp Festival.
It was then time for lunch.
Except lunch was not here at the house.
We took Sister to the Catfish restaurant because it is her birthday today.
When we returned, I had Chris choose outfits for the show, and I packed the bag to go into the camper.
So many small things to think about when getting ready for shows.
I also repaired several earrings with bigger hooks, so I don't have to fight them anymore.
I heard talking going on outside, so I went over to chat with another
sister-in-law that came for her sister's birthday.
I grabbed the pin project and chatted while sewing on the band for the hat.
That done, it was time to feed the dogs and take them for their daily ride.
Ride done; I begged off cooking tonight, opting for leftovers or sandwiches.
Finally made it back to the studio to paint for a couple of hours.

Back to the calmness in a situation.....
I tried to send photos to my email, but I am getting an error message.
So, I sent the photo to the blog, via my phone, then edited on the computer.
Years ago, when I started the blog, I would've totally lost my mind to get an error message like that.
Instead, I have signed out of my account, and will be turning off the computer in an effort to figure out the situation tomorrow.

Long, interesting, hectic, day.
Actually, a typical day around here.....
Never a dull moment at the Raccoon Retreat Studio in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama!

Seahorses II

Today is another one of the "happy accident" canvas.
Narrow and somewhat difficult to arrange the pieces in them because they are so narrow.
I'm very happy with how they turned out when completed today.

I also spent the better part of the afternoon trying to lay out a design
for the other two "happy accident" canvases.
After trying for a good while to fit what I wanted, I abandoned the project.
I even had redrawn the design twice.
It just didn't look like what I had in my mind.
Turns out, the new pieces I am working on will fit the bill.
Pelicans on pilings will work.
I love this man I married, but he sure challenges me sometimes as an artist!

Speaking of challenges.
Chris threw me another one today.
He had leftover lumber in the shop and decided to build.
Two offset 15 x 30s shadowboxes (with somewhat small openings).
One 30 x 30 centered shadowbox.
I laid them out, then asked him to move the opening on one to the upper corner.
Once painted, they will be a beautiful addition to my booth.

I finally took the time to paint the sides of the big octopus and large heron today too.
I will check them for pencil lines, erasing when necessary, tomorrow.
Then varnish and wires.
They will then be placed aside to dry for a few days, then get packed and marked for shows.
It's a cycle of creating here at the Raccoon Retreat Studio in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama!

Seahorses

Such beautiful creatures that God has made!
I love to paint seahorses.
(Well, you know I love to paint all sea creatures!)
Seahorses are just such almost comical little things, swimming with their tiny little fins.
They are fascinating to watch, drifting to their next destination,
then grabbing hold of the coral or grasses.
They also fascinate me with the male carrying and caring for the babies.
More to come, as there is a matching canvas opposite to this one with lined seahorses.

Speaking of canvas....
As most of you know, or soon will know, my canvases are hand built and stretched.
This one is no exception.
Although sometimes Chris gets in a little hurry while building them.
So much of a hurry, he makes "happy accidents."
This one, or actually 4 of them have a little difference,
in that they have a 4-inch reveal on the outer edge.
This makes the inner shadowbox 4 inches as well.
Incredibly small to paint in.
Even harder to stretch, as Chris discovered.
He took on the task of stretching the other day and this included these 4 "happy accidents".
He managed to complain a little while doing them.
He did mention that his stretching them will remind him of the measurement in the future.
Living, learning, and laughter fill the studio these days.
Happy to have you along for the ride!

Three for Four

Today's paintings represent two days.
I spent the majority of the day cleaning up the mess that is my studio presently.
I cannot walk by, without something slithering to the floor.
I have thousands of reference photos that I use.
Some of them are photos I took, some are friend's photos that they graciously let me use,
others are from the internet and are changed a lot before they leave my studio.
I "Frankenstein" a lot of my paintings, using my knowledge of animal anatomy to manipulate several photos into one that I can then paint.
These guys are a little of both.
The upper one was almost completed at artwalk in June.
It was then brought to the studio for completion, wiring, and varnishing.
The one below was completed in my studio yesterday.
They are each large examples of these beautiful birds that grace our coasts.
"Great Blue I" and "Great Blue II"
Each measures 16 x 40 inches and will be at Hello Gallery in downtown Fairhope.
I may add the large round herons as well just for fun!
They will make a gorgeous grouping together for sure!

The last of the six rounds from my studio has a lined seahorse.
These guys are incredibly fun to paint.
Lined seahorse is on a 24-inch round wood panel.
I am really enjoying the colorful creations in my studio these days.
I keep dreaming of the booth at the National Shrimp Festival this year, with it starting with sepias on one side gradually shifting to partial color, then full color paintings on the other side.
It's going to be fun to create, then hang at the show.
I will have to be careful to have back stock to fill in during the show, so the booth stays full.
A lot of my artist friends are nervous about the upcoming show season,
I am remaining optimistic that the pieces will sell.
God continues to bless me in my artistic endeavors. giving me the images to paint.
Even if paintings don't sell at shows, there are two galleries that want the pieces that don't sell.
Big Fish Trading Company in Foley, as well as my local hang out, "Hello Gallery" at 18 South Section Street in downtown Fairhope.

Oh! and there's the one woman show at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center.
The show will feature my Steampunk & Marine pieces, Steampunk style tables and my son Jere's lamps, as well as some of Christopher's woodturning.
It will hang for December and January.
There will be multiple prints of the steampunk available for purchase as Christmas presents.
Ornaments are coming too!
Both steampunk and marine ornaments will be available.
I am so delighted to have been invited back for the third year in a row!
It's always fun to be there, the people that run the Center are so kind and supportive.
Mark your calendars, December 9th, 2023, is the official opening reception.
Steampunk and the Sea!

So, things are humming along here at the Raccoon Retreat studio in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama.
I am joyous to be on this journey with those who follow the blog!
I am blessed indeed!

Seahorses are some of my favorites!

I love painting seahorses.
They are just a fun creature to look at, watch while swimming, and seeing them bob as they wrap their tails around the coral or sea grass.
This one, I noticed after I painted him,
has apparently given birth as his belly is sunk in afterward.
Such a delicate precious creature, the seahorse!

I spent another day at church working on VBS.
Things are progressing way better than I expected, with the major work being completed tomorrow.
I've never been this far, this soon before setup day.
We put everything in on July 31st.
This gives me a couple of weeks before I have to jump that hurdle.

In the meantime, I paint for my show!

100 days~100 paintings 2022

The 100 days of paintings actually started this year on Tuesday June 28th.
Time got away from me however, and I am just now getting to post!
I really enjoy the paintings every year as well as the comments when you read the blog!

This year, I begin with sewing machine drawers.
These are taken from vintage sewing machines in bad condition and used in a whole new way!
We break down the drawers from the machine and my husband Chris cuts them down into thirds.
He then uses wood panels to fill in the openings from more recycled wood.
I am amazed with how they turn out every time I do them.

It all started with a sewing machine our neighbor had that she wanted turned into a table.
She did not want the drawers or the machine.
The machine is very heavy and my husband used it for weight added to his lathe.
(Several months later, our son commandeered the machine as he is making lamps out of them.)
The drawers however presented a problem, throw them away or creatively reuse them.
I am so grateful that Chris is talented enough to help me reuse them.
So far, we've repurposed 3 machines and have plans for more.
Each machine allows me to create anywhere from 18 to 24 little pieces of art.
They are proving to be popular!

This summer will be interesting as I have been invited back to the
Audubon Center in Mississippi for another one woman show.
The first one was called "My Ocean Odyssey" and was one of their most popular shows.
I am honored that they believe in my works enough to invite me back this year.
This show will be called "My Nature Odyssey"
The show will have my usual marine life and shadowbox canvases, as well as multiple piece works.
One entire wall will be flora and fauna from our beautiful gulf coast!
Hummingbirds, shorebirds, raptors, and earthly creatures will make for a fun show.

The National Shrimp festival in Gulf Shores will happen this year!
I am now 95 days out from this wonderful show that is one of my favorites.
This year, I will have a double booth.
One booth will be of the marine life sepias, possibly moving from sepia to color added on some.
The other will be the Steampunk that has proven popular during the spring shows.
The Steampunk has also gotten some awards this spring.

Come along for the ride this summer!

Ornament central

Before painting

Well!
After an afternoon of pressing trimming, and mounting, then baking.
I had 24 ornaments ready for paint.
The pearl ornaments have pearl paint on them, while the gold have a lovely interference gold.
The white have silver accents while the gold have gold accents.
I will have to see tomorrow if the gold shows up properly.
Unfortunately, one of the seahorses decided to jump off the ornament and shattered.
I now have 23.
No worries, I can make more!
And I will be making more shortly.
I have at least another 84 to make.
They all will need to be signed as well!
Show season, busy season!
But for now, Goodnight!

Seahorse II

Another day, another painting.
This is one of the series of sewing machine drawers.
I'm really enjoying painting them.

I was not in a good mood today.
It was hard to get anything done, and whatever I did, didn't make me happy at all.
Chris and I worked on the trailer today.
He has worked so hard on the trailer for us to carry to shows.
Using poor mans fiberglass, he's coated it, sanded it, and coated it again.
Then he added paint that I bought for extreme weather.
After he painted it pale grey, I wanted to stripe it similarly as our new to us motorhome.
This trailer has been a journey for him.
Starting out with a jet ski trailer that had an awesome torsion axle.
The trailer itself was trash because it was rusting from the inside out.
He kept the axle, and welded together a new trailer frame.
He then built the box for the trailer as we need a 4x6 and they are almost impossible to find.
He then coated it , painted it, sanded it, and painted again.
The striping looks really neat, although I think it's backwards to the motorhome.
That's what he wanted, that's what he got.
All in all, a great project almost finished and ready for a tag!
That's next week!

I've been working on the new steampunk piece in my studio today.
I am moving forward with the steampunk, even though I have no show specifically for them.
In between chatting with my African friend and African "son".
I worked hard, laying on colors for the backgrounds of the steampunk parts.
They are both wonderful artists and I am praying they do well in a show next month.
Their show was the same weekend as the National Shrimp Festival.
I have not told them yet of the cancellation.
Next month.....
I pray the other shows don't cancel as well!
I really wish people would stop politicizing a pandemic and get the shot already,
wear a mask, and distance.
Don't even get me started on football games!

Seahorse I

Well!
This is a hard one to post.
The National Shrimp Festival cancelled the show today.
I have to admit, it's taking the wind out of my sails for a moment.
The good news is, the other shows are silent so far as cancelling is concerned.
I get it, but this is seriously messing with my income for this year!
I prayed okay God, what are you trying to teach me?

TRUST!
Trust that He will provide.
Rely on His provision.
Understand His will.
Stand on His word.
Teach others about trusting.

The same message God gave me last year when the shows were all collapsing.
I now pass it on to you!

Worked hard on a Steampunk piece design today.
Paint to follow soon afterwards.
