As you can tell from the first three days, I am in love with sea turtles.
I am part of a team that walks Alabama beaches every day looking for
evidence of a crawl and a possible nest.
While we don't walk every day ourselves, there are teams all over the Gulf Coast
that walk 22 miles in teams each day from May until the end of August.
Our stretch in Orange beach has been sadly lacking in nests and crawls and this has me doing my own turtle dance, trying to get them to come ashore.
You see, the momma turtles don't like lights, and really don't like to be
harassed either by humans or animals such as coyotes.
It will cause them to either turn around, or not even come ashore.
Please leave them alone if you find one nesting along our coast.
In fact keep others away and call the turtle hotline that is in every condo or the police
and they will notify the proper authorities.
Remember, it is a FEDERAL offense to harass these protected species, as some people so recently found out by being arrested after several people reported them.
Why are turtle nests important?
An average of 1 hatchling will survive out of each nest to reach adulthood
and possibly nest on their own.
